What Is The Powerball Lottery?
The Powerball drawing is a massive lottery game played across 45 states plus Washington D.C., Puerto Rico, and the US Virgin Islands. It’s incredibly popular thanks to its jaw-dropping prize amounts. As of this writing, the current prize sits at $37 million. But the prize increases until someone wins, so the ceiling on possible jackpot amounts can skyrocket into the hundreds of millions. How Do You Play?
To play Powerball, you select five numbers between 1 and 69 for the white balls, then one number between 1 and 26 for the final red ball. Your goal is to match your picks with the numbers randomly selected on draw days (Wednesdays and Saturdays at 10:59 p.m. Eastern). Each ticket costs $2.
If you wish, you can choose to play the same set of numbers for multiple drawings. You can also buy Power Play for an extra $1, which can multiply non-jackpot winnings.
There are multiple ways to win, but the only way to nab the full jackpot is to match every number exactly with the random drawing and get the red powerball correct. The order of the white balls, however, doesn’t matter. White balls are presented on Powerball tickets in numerical order.
